About 300 anti-migrant demonstrators marched to the perimeter of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) summit in Durban on Monday, demanding regional leaders “fetch their people” living in South Africa.

Heavily armed officers, backed by helicopters, drones, and horseback units, marshalled the crowds outside the 16-nation gathering.

Demonstrations by anti-immigrant groups have already prompted roughly 176,000 foreign nationals—primarily from Malawi, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe—to flee the country in recent weeks.

Protest leader Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma addressed the regional delegates directly, urging them to repatriate illegal immigrants.

The anti-foreign unrest has claimed at least four lives, according to South African police, drawing harsh international criticism from nations such as Ghana and Nigeria.

Speaking on the sidelines of the summit, President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed deep concern and shame over the systemic discrimination facing foreign residents, even as South Africa assumes the rotating SADC chairship and calls for a continent-wide conference to resolve migration challenges.
