Pakistan's Supreme Court on August 18, 2026, has ordered jailed former prime minister Imran Khan to be moved to hospital for medical checks, after a petition by his lawyers over claims of poor health.

Former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan has been transferred back to Adiala Jail after undergoing court-ordered medical checks, authorities said, hours after his lawyers raised concerns over his health.

The 73-year-old former cricket captain was taken for medical evaluation on Friday following a Supreme Court directive issued earlier in the week. The court had ordered that Khan be examined at Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad after his legal team filed a petition seeking medical attention.

However, Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said Khan was instead taken to a public hospital because of security concerns linked to expected gatherings at the private facility.

Tarar said a team of doctors, including an ophthalmologist, cardiologist and physician, conducted a “detailed examination” and found Khan medically fit.

“After the completion of this entire process, he was transferred back to Adiala Jail,” Tarar wrote on X.

The decision has drawn criticism from Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, with party leaders accusing authorities of disregarding the Supreme Court’s directive.

Provincial lawmaker Sohail Afridi said the government’s handling of the medical visit was unacceptable.

“The authorities don’t even take the court seriously,” Afridi told journalists in Islamabad, adding that the party would “file a contempt of court case”.

Khan’s family has also raised concerns about his treatment in detention. His sister, Uzma Khan, a medical doctor, said her brother complained about his condition during the examination.

“He kept saying, ‘I am not OK. I have no books, no human contact’,” she said, claiming that only his eye was examined.

She described his prolonged isolation as “torture”, saying the lack of human contact had affected his wellbeing.

Khan’s personal physician, Faisal Sultan, said he waited at Shifa International Hospital before being informed that the former prime minister would not be taken there.

The former leader, who served as Pakistan’s prime minister from 2018 to 2022, has faced several legal cases since his removal from office through a no-confidence vote. Khan and his supporters have repeatedly described the cases as politically motivated.

His arrest in 2023 led to nationwide protests, some of which turned violent and resulted in hundreds of arrests. A further court hearing in the current case has been scheduled for September 16.
