Williams, Alcaraz Exit US Open Mixed Quarter-Finals

Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli knocked Serena Williams and Carlos Alcaraz out of the US Open mixed doubles tournament on Tuesday, securing a 5-4, 4-1 victory.

The Swiss-Italian duo advanced to Wednesday’s final stages after halting the star-studded pair’s run in the second round.

Despite Williams making a high-profile return to Arthur Ashe Stadium alongside Alcaraz, Bencic and Cobolli outplayed the fan favourites.

“We felt their aura for sure,” Bencic said following the win. “It was an honour to play.” Cobolli added, “Playing Serena and Carlos on Arthur Ashe is not easy… So now maybe we take a beer.”

The defeat capped an evening of upsets in the experimental mixed doubles event.

Katerina Siniakova and Henry Patten eliminated Novak Djokovic and Aryna Sabalenka in three sets, while Mirra Andreeva and Andrey Rublev ousted defending champions Andrea Vavassori and Sara Errani.

Meanwhile, the husband-and-wife team of Gael Monfils and Elina Svitolina advanced to the semifinals after claiming a quarterfinal tie-break victory over Siniakova and Patten.
