Icelanders headed to the polls on Saturday to vote in a referendum on whether to resume membership negotiations with the European Union (EU).

Voters are deciding whether to restart talks that the government suspended in 2013 following the country’s 2009 financial crisis.

Polling places opened at 9:00 am and will close at 10:00 pm, with opinion polls showing an extremely tight race within the margin of error between the ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ camps.

Foreign Minister Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdottir expressed optimism for the pro-EU side, though the outcome remains uncertain.

A victory for the ‘Yes’ campaign would direct the government to negotiate an accession agreement with Brussels, which citizens would then vote on in a separate, final referendum.

Central to the debate is control over Iceland’s key fishing industry, though recent geopolitical instability and economic pressures have heavily influenced voter sentiment.

Opponents of the initiative argue that Iceland prospers independently and already accesses the EU single market through the European Economic Area.

However, supporters point to high domestic interest rates and inflation, arguing that eventual adoption of the euro would stabilise household finances.

EU officials, including Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos, are closely monitoring the vote, as Icelandic accession would mark a significant expansion for the bloc.
