Ruto Orders Crackdown On Illegal Foreign Traders

Kenya’s President William Ruto has ordered a crackdown on illegal hawkers after Kenyan traders complained about foreign competition.

Ruto gave the directive while meeting small traders at State House on Wednesday.

He tasked State Department for Industry Principal Secretary Juma Mukhwana and Trade Cabinet Secretary Lee Kinyanjui with enforcing the law against illegal traders.

The President also said Parliament was working on a Bill that would restrict foreigners from engaging in certain businesses in Kenya.

He added that the proposed law would help close loopholes that allow foreigners to engage in restricted local businesses.

Local traders have raised concerns over the growing number of foreign traders from countries including Burundi, Somalia and Tanzania.

They have accused foreign traders of competing with Kenyans in businesses such as food sales, mitumba and retail shops.
