Nepal Faces Massive Recovery After Catastrophic Floods

Nepal has recorded at least $2.56 billion in property, housing and infrastructure losses from last week’s catastrophic floods. The country will also need about $52.6 million for early recovery, including rebuilding roads, setting up temporary shelters, restoring electricity, and providing drinking water.

Chief of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, Dharma Raj Upreti, said the estimate covers the first four months of recovery.

Upreti told Reuters on Friday that “These are estimated amounts. We have calculated this in coordination with different concerned agencies and departments”.

He said a detailed damage assessment would be carried out soon. Upreti also said Nepal would need to rebuild about 20,000 houses in flood-hit areas, with at least 7,500 completely destroyed.

The floods began after a glacier collapsed on August 26, sending ice, rock and mud down the Trishuli River near Nepal’s border with China.

The disaster destroyed towns and villages, killed more than 1,250 people and left over 4,200 others missing. Thousands of people have also been displaced.
