Nigeria to Lead UN Budget Committee Reforms

Nigeria officially assumed the chairmanship of the United Nations General Assembly’s Fifth Committee on Friday, taking charge of the organisation’s administrative and budgetary oversight.

Speaking after assuming leadership of the powerful body, Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, pledged to champion far-reaching administrative reforms, institutional accountability, and operational transparency.

Ambassador Ibrahim declared that his leadership would reject “business as usual” practices, insisting that every dollar within the UN budget must yield tangible benefits for all 193 Member States.

As Chair, Nigeria will direct critical negotiations concerning the global body’s operational budgets, human resources policy, financial governance, and mandate funding.

Ambassador Ibrahim highlighted that leading the committee elevates diplomatic standing for both Nigeria and Africa, creating a vital platform to build global consensus as the UN faces mounting financial constraints and calls for systemic overhaul.

He promised an inclusive process where transparency guides every decision and all member nations maintain a meaningful voice in committee proceedings.
