Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Saturday detailed elements of his proposed production subsidy for petroleum products, stating it would support domestic refining to lower fuel prices and ease daily living costs for Nigerian households, particularly women.
In a post on X, Atiku responded to a supporter’s prayer and explained the policy’s intended impact.
He described a typical Nigerian woman who rises early to prepare children for school, manage a small business or market activities, and ensure food is on the table.
Lower fuel prices under the plan, he said, would reduce transport costs, help bring down food prices, ease the running of small shops, and leave more money available for family needs.
“That is what my production subsidy is about: support what we refine here, create jobs here, reduce the cost of fuel here, and make everyday life more affordable for Nigerian families,” Atiku wrote.
He added that with understanding, support and collective effort, “we can make Nigeria affordable again.”

Atiku, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate for the 2027 election, has in recent statements described the approach as shifting subsidy support from imported petroleum products to crude supplied to qualifying domestic refineries.
The stated goal is to lower production costs for fuel refined in Nigeria while creating local jobs and keeping economic benefits within the country.
The former vice president has said the proposal includes transparency measures, independent verification and conditions requiring refineries to pass benefits through to consumers via domestic supply of products.
He has contrasted it with previous import-focused subsidy regimes.
Ameen Ya Rabbi, Khadijat. Jazakumllahu khairan for your kind prayer. May Allah accept it, reward you abundantly, and grant us the wisdom, strength and sincerity to serve our people well.
