Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed to seek a fair and mutually acceptable resolution to their contested border during a meeting at the BRICS summit in New Delhi.

The visit marks Xi’s first trip to India since 2019 and represents the most significant step toward thawing relations after a deadly 2020 military clash.

While both nations have recently restored flights, visas, and high-level contacts, standard military forces remain heavily deployed along their disputed 3,500-kilometre high-altitude border.

Beyond territorial disputes, the two leaders focused on economic relations, addressing a record $112 billion trade deficit in China’s favour out of $151 billion in total bilateral trade.

Modi emphasised that both nations must honour existing border agreements and build their relationship on mutual respect, sensitivity, and shared interests.

Xi called for high-quality financial cooperation and open economic globalisation, while Tibetan exiles protested his presence elsewhere in the capital.

Both leaders ultimately committed to addressing structural trade imbalances and securing market access to build a stable bilateral partnership.
