The Bayelsa State Independent Electoral Commission (BYSIEC) has suspended the electoral process for the state’s 2027 local government elections.
The commission also suspended all party primaries for the council elections pending the determination of a suit filed by the Zenith Labour Party and Accord Party.
BYSIEC announced the suspension in a public notice on Saturday, signed by its Commissioner for Media and Publicity, Augustus Elliot, on behalf of the commission’s chairman.
The state’s electoral commission said the decision follows the legal action by the two political parties challenging aspects of the electoral process.
The commission directed all political parties to halt their primaries until the court determines the case.
“The Bayelsa State Independent Electoral Commission hereby announces temporary suspension of the Electoral process leading to the conduct of the 2027 Local Government Elections,” it said.
It added, “Consequently, all Party Primaries are hereby suspended, pending the outcome of a suit filed by the Zenith Labour Party and Accord Party against the Bayelsa State Independent Electoral Commission.”
It also urged political parties, other stakeholders and members of the public to take note of the suspension and comply with the directive.
The development comes as political parties and aspirants prepare for the 2027 council elections across Bayelsa State’s eight local government areas.
The suspension is expected to temporarily halt parties’ candidate selection until the legal issues surrounding the electoral process are resolved.
