The United States implemented major revisions to its Canadian tariff list on Tuesday, imposing 50 per cent duties on cheeses, motorboats, mattresses, furniture, and select aluminium and steel products.

The shift comes just weeks ahead of the US midterm elections as businesses and consumers face sustained high living costs.

Senior US officials insisted the amended sanctions affect only a fraction of total bilateral trade.

The White House simultaneously exempted several critical goods from the 50 per cent penalty, removing toilet paper, facial tissue, fishing gear, and bulk whiskies from the list.

Officials also spared road salt and construction-grade cement following targeted pressure from lawmakers, including Maine Senator Susan Collins, who voiced concerns over winter road safety and infrastructure projects in northern states.

The policy update marks the latest escalation in a trade conflict that began when President Donald Trump applied a 50 per cent tariff on $20 billion in Canadian imports in August under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930.

Canada retaliated with matching duties, prompting the US to schedule additional bans on Canadian dairy and alcoholic beverages for September 29.

Furthermore, a senior US official confirmed that Washington still intends to raise tariffs on Canadian automobiles from 25 per cent to 50 per cent in January.
