US President Donald Trump assailed the Supreme Court on Tuesday after justices denied his request to lift a stay on his executive order restricting mail-in voting.
Trump accused the court’s conservative majority of lacking courage and caving to opposition pressure, writing on Truth Social that certain justices are “petrified of these crazed and depraved Democrats.”
Democratic-led states successfully challenged the March order, arguing that the US Constitution grants state governments, rather than the federal executive branch, primary authority over election administration.
Writing for the majority, Justice Brett Kavanaugh stated that while the administration’s restrictions might prove legal upon full judicial review, state and local election officials lack sufficient time to implement new rules before November’s midterm elections.
Only two conservative justices dissented from the ruling.
The high-stakes legal battle unfolds as both parties fight for control of Congress, with Democrats aiming to overturn narrow Republican majorities in the House and Senate amid voter concerns over living costs and ongoing military conflicts.
