Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has mourned veteran Nollywood actor and film executive Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, who has died at 84.
Jacobs’ death was announced by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, on Instagram on Wednesday.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu described Jacobs as one of Nigeria’s most distinguished actors.
The President also praised his five-decade career across theatre, television and international film.
Tinubu said Jacobs played a major role in developing and professionalising Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
He added that the actor inspired generations of performers and filmmakers through his talent, discipline and dedication.
The President also praised Jacobs’ ability to bring “depth, dignity, and authenticity” to his roles.
“He was a giant of the Nigerian creative industry. His passing is a great loss to Nigeria, the African film industry and the global community of lovers of the performing arts,” Tinubu said.
He added that Jacobs’ body of work “will continue to speak to generations yet unborn.”
Tinubu said the nation recognised the contribution of creative professionals to Nigeria’s cultural identity, global image and economic growth.
“Olu Jacobs played a big role in creating this identity,” he said.
Tinubu extended his condolences to Jacobs’ wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, their children and other relatives.
He also sympathised with Jacobs’ colleagues and the wider Nigerian creative community.
The President prayed for the actor’s soul to rest in peace.
