NLC Warns Soaring Fuel Prices Deepen Hardship

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has raised the alarm over spiralling fuel prices, warning that petrol pump prices — now as high as N1,430 in major cities are deepening hardship nationwide.

In a press statement on Thursday titled “Save The Situation Now,” NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero said the hikes have “inflicted incalculable damage to not only wages but our state of being as a people and as a nation.”

The union linked the latest surge to renewed tensions in the Gulf, but argued Nigeria’s status as an oil producer should cushion citizens from global shocks.

It also criticised the paradox of local refineries importing crude, calling the practice “unreasonable and unacceptable” and a defeat of local refining capacity.

NLC is demanding immediate wage awards for workers, crude sales to local refineries in naira, and expanded national fuel storage, cautioning that a government seeking re-election “cannot afford to stand and watch marketers inflict suffering on the citizenry.”
