President Donald Trump has renewed his push for a broader and more assertive use of the US military, both in the Western Hemisphere and beyond, as opposition to the Iran war continues to grow.
“Our actions in Venezuela are proof that the United States will no longer permit threats to America to gain a foothold anywhere in the Western Hemisphere,” Trump said in his speech to the UN General Assembly. “And if necessary, we will use our unmatched military might to secure the vital national interests of the United States.”
He went on to highlight the administration’s use of the military against drug cartels, which he described as the “ISIS of the Western Hemisphere”, including the controversial boat strikes carried out by the administration.

Trump also appeared to gesture towards Cuba and drug cartels operating inside Mexico, which he has repeatedly discussed in connection with possible military action.
“It’s unacceptable for the United States to share a 2,000-mile border with a territory controlled by enemy cartels,” Trump said of Mexico. “So Mexico must reclaim control of its soil from the enemies of humanity.”

Trump added that Cuba’s government “will fall,” and suggested it negotiate with Secretary of State Marco Rubio. “He’s deep into negotiations with Cuba,” Trump said. “Let’s see what happens.” Cuba’s delegation walked out during that part of the speech.
He also indicated he was prepared to use the US military beyond the Western Hemisphere.
“We are reasserting American power, including American military power, where necessary in our region and around the world to create a safer future for all of us,” he said. “It’s happening and it’s happening quickly.”
Trump has made similar remarks in the past, including in late 2025. However, his decision to reiterate them comes at a time when opposition to the war is widespread among Americans, while some prominent Republicans have also publicly broken with him over the conflict.
