The World Health Organisation (WHO) has reported 67 confirmed yellow fever cases, including 18 deaths, in Nigeria and eight other African countries between January 1 and October 12, 2026.

In its latest situation report released on Friday, WHO listed the affected countries as Burkina Faso, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria and Togo.

The organisation said recent outbreaks have been concentrated in Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana and Liberia. Some of the affected communities are also located close to international borders.

WHO identified activities around forests, mining sites and other outdoor work as major risk factors for infection. It warned that frequent cross-border movement, the presence of mosquitoes that can transmit the virus and gaps in vaccination coverage could increase infections and spread the disease to other areas.

To contain the outbreaks, affected countries are working with WHO and other partners to strengthen disease surveillance and investigate reported cases. They are also conducting laboratory tests and increasing efforts to identify people who may have been infected.

“Other response measures include risk communication, community engagement and vaccination activities targeting affected communities and areas considered at increased risk of infection,” WHO said.

The health agency assessed the regional public health risk of the ongoing yellow fever situation as moderate on October 27, 2026.

However, it said the global public health risk remained low.
