Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez blamed a failure of Moroccan border controls for an unprecedented migrant surge into Spain’s North African territory of Ceuta.

During a CNN interview in New York, Sanchez confirmed that investigations are underway while demanding answers and corrective actions from Rabat.

The crisis erupted on July 30 and 31 when more than 70,000 migrants crossed into the enclave, resulting in localised violence and ongoing protests by residents over the thousands who remain.

A Spanish police report analysing satellite images and video evidence revealed that Moroccan border security was unusually light and made no serious effort to stop the influx.

While Sanchez noted a lack of concrete proof that Morocco deliberately orchestrated the surge, Madrid continues to demand official explanations.

Spanish officials are now evaluating remaining migrants for asylum eligibility, though special protections prevent the summary deportation of unaccompanied minors.
