Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez criticised the club’s board and technical director Jason Wilcox for a lack of transfer investment following Tuesday’s 2-0 Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid.
Speaking after the loss in Madrid—which extended United’s winless streak to five matches and marked their worst domestic start in 40 years—Martinez stated that the team’s performance reflected broader organisational failures at the club.
The Argentine international expressed frustration that United failed to properly build upon last season’s third-place Premier League finish despite spending £140 million on midfielders Carlos Baleba, Youri Tielemans, and Andrey Santos.

Martinez argued that management left the squad unprepared for elite European fixtures by failing to recruit in critical positions, including left-back and striker, while cautioning against replacing manager Michael Carrick amid mounting pressure.

United manager Carrick downplayed the defender’s post-match comments as an emotional reaction to a disappointing result, noting he had not yet heard the interview.
However, former United forward Wayne Rooney criticised Martinez’s public outburst, arguing that internal frustrations should remain private and warning that such comments could jeopardise the defender’s future at Old Trafford under minority owner Jim Ratcliffe.
