Resident doctors at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, have suspended their 50-day industrial action for an initial period of eight weeks, following an intervention by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde.

The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) announced the suspension in a letter of appreciation jointly signed by its President, Dr Mustapha Adedapo; Public Relations Officer, Dr Abdulrahman Fofie; and Assistant General Secretary, Dr Oladayo Bada, on Friday.

The association thanked the governor for intervening in the dispute and engaging stakeholders to address the issues that prompted the strike.

The doctors highlighted Makinde’s hospital visit and a stakeholders’ meeting held on October 15, 2026, at Gangway Hall, which the governor chaired.

The meeting was attended by government officials, members of the hospital’s governing board, the leadership of the Oyo State House of Assembly and other stakeholders.

“The presence of key government officials, members of the hospital board, the leadership of the State House of Assembly, and other stakeholders underscored the seriousness and sincerity of government in addressing the longstanding concerns raised by healthcare workers,” the letter stated.

According to the ARD, the meeting provided an opportunity for the association to present its key demands, including implementation of the Medical Residency Training Act (MRTA), payment of the 2025 Minimum Wage Arrears and implementation of the Revised Professional Allowance Table (PAT).

The association said the governor committed to ensuring that the 2025 Minimum Wage Arrears were paid on or before mid-November 2026.

Makinde also directed the establishment of a multi-stakeholder committee to develop modalities for implementing the Professional Allowance Table within six weeks.

On the Medical Residency Training Act Bill, the governor committed to ensuring its passage by October 28, with presidential-style assent at the state level expected in the first week of November 2026.

The ARD said the commitments demonstrated the government’s intention to improve the welfare of healthcare workers, strengthen the state’s health system and improve healthcare delivery.

“These commitments demonstrate His Excellency’s dedication to strengthening the healthcare system in Oyo State, improving the welfare of healthcare workers, and ensuring quality healthcare delivery to the people of the state,” the association said.

Following an Emergency General Meeting on October 16, the doctors reviewed the outcome of their discussions with the government and resolved to suspend the 50-day strike for an initial eight weeks.

“In recognition of the Governor’s goodwill and the ongoing efforts of the Government and Hospital Management toward resolving our demands, the Association resolved to suspend its fifty (50)-day industrial action for an initial period of eight (8) weeks,” the letter noted.

All resident doctors were directed to resume full clinical duties on Saturday, October 17, 2026.

The association said it expected the government to implement the agreed commitments within the stated timelines and expressed optimism that the development would lead to a lasting resolution of its concerns.

“We are optimistic that the commitments made will be implemented within the agreed timelines and that this marks the beginning of a lasting resolution to the concerns of our members.”

The doctors also pledged to maintain constructive engagement with the government, promote industrial harmony and continue providing healthcare services to residents of Oyo State.
