Edo State is set to regain electricity supply after Governor Monday Okpebholo and leaders of organised labour settled a recognition dispute involving the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) caretaker committee.
The breakthrough occurred during a closed-door reconciliation meeting in Abuja convened by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, alongside NLC President Joe Ajaero, Minister of Labour and Employment Dr Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, and former Edo Governor Senator Adams Oshiomhole.
Blackouts had gripped the state due to dual conflicts: an industrial standoff between BEDC Electricity Plc and the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) over worker pay, and friction over the state’s Joseph Igbafe-led NLC caretaker leadership.

Following the peace talks, state officials agreed to formally recognise the caretaker committee and collaborate with union leaders on conducting a substantive labour election within three to six months.

Diplomatic Resolution
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Governor Okpebholo affirmed, “There is no issue actually, and we have resolved the issues that border the NLC caretaker committee in Edo.”
NLC President Joe Ajaero confirmed the deal, declaring, “Consequently, power will be restored in Edo.”
Key stakeholders praised the diplomatic resolution and committed to rebuilding industrial trust across the state.
Senator Adams Oshiomhole dismissed the crisis as a “communication gap,” noting that “the reason for continuing the action no longer existed” and stressing that renewed cooperation is vital to maintain industrial harmony.
Minister Dingyadi reiterated the immediate relief for citizens, stating, “The principal issue, which is electricity, is going to be restored immediately.”
SGF Akume also commended all participating parties for choosing dialogue over prolonged conflict to secure peace and economic progress for Edo State.
