Swiss health authorities have confirmed that a woman infected with the Bundibugyo ebolavirus is receiving treatment at Geneva University Hospital (HUG), while her husband, a close contact, is in isolation at Zurich University Hospital (USZ).

The Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) said the couple, both Swiss citizens, arrived in Switzerland on Monday via a medical evacuation flight from Nigeria.

“The HUG and the USZ are equipped to deal with such cases and can manage the individuals concerned while at the same time ensuring the safety both of staff and of all other patients,” the FOPH said in a statement on Monday.

The office said it is liaising closely with the university hospitals and cantonal authorities.

It noted that since 2019, the two hospitals have been designated as reference centers equipped with isolation wards and trained staff to treat diseases such as Ebola.

In a telephone conversation, Swiss Federal Councillor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider expressed her appreciation to Nigeria’s Minister of Health, Muhammad Ali Pate.

She thanked the doctors and healthcare professionals for the excellent care provided to the two Swiss nationals in Nigeria, as well as the Nigerian authorities and the WHO for their cooperation in making the repatriation possible.
