The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s 2027 Lagos State governorship candidate, Adedeji Doherty, has ruled out stepping down for another aspirant, insisting that he remains committed to contesting the governorship election.
Doherty made the remarks during NewsCentral Breakfast Central on Wednesday, while responding to a question about whether he would withdraw from the race if asked to do so.
He said stepping down would only become an option if discussions among political stakeholders had reached an advanced stage.

“I don’t think the issue of stepping down will be an issue,” Doherty said.
He added that FCT Minister Nyesom Wike would not ask anyone to withdraw from a race unless discussions had progressed significantly.

However, Doherty acknowledged that he had stepped down from a previous political contest in 2011 in support of former Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola. He explained that their manifestos were similar at the time, adding that his current ambition stemmed from his belief that he could deliver better governance.
“I am not hungry for governor. I am really going out for governor because I believe that I can execute the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr President better than those that are there right now,” he said.
Doherty also criticised some of the Lagos State Government’s policies, particularly the proposed solar panel levy and the Boho levy, questioning whether they were appropriate at a time when residents were facing economic difficulties. He argued that the government should focus on policies that improve residents’ welfare and service delivery.
The governorship aspirant also said he had spoken with Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat several times and discussed various issues with him.
Doherty maintained that he believed he could perform better than the current administration, insisting that his ambition was based on his plans for Lagos State and his confidence in his ability to deliver.
