South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has cast his vote in the country’s 2026 Local Government Elections, urging citizens to turn out in large numbers and exercise their democratic rights.
Ramaphosa said on Wednesday that the elections give South Africans an important opportunity to shape their communities’ future.

He also expressed confidence in the African National Congress (ANC), saying the party would improve service delivery if given another mandate to govern municipalities. He said he was encouraged by the number of people who had turned out to vote, adding that their participation showed that “democracy is alive”.
Despite the challenges facing local governments, Ramaphosa said the government would rebuild municipal structures to ensure that its promise of a better life for citizens “becomes a reality”. He also said he was confident all political parties would remain committed to serving the people.
The president urged voters to recognise their responsibility in determining the future of the country and their municipalities through the ballot box.
“The people have the responsibility to determine the future of the country and the future of their municipalities,” he said.
The Local Government Elections will determine who leads municipalities and oversees essential services in communities across South Africa.
