Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has launched his 2027 presidential campaign in Sokoto State, outlining plans to address the country’s security challenges and the rising cost of living.
Speaking at a rally on Wednesday, Abubakar, the candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), assured supporters of his commitment to nationwide security.
“Some of our promises that I make to Nigeria, one of our promises is to make sure that security is restored in every part of this country,” he said.
Abubakar also reaffirmed his intention to reinstate fuel subsidies, a position that differentiates him from his opponents.
“I reiterated my promise to return to fuel subsidy,” he stated.

The former vice president, who is making his seventh bid for the presidency, proposes a “targeted” subsidy model described as “capped and budgeted production support tied to fuel refined in Nigeria.”
This contrasts with the policies of President Bola Tinubu, who ended the subsidy and floated the naira, reforms the administration argues were necessary but which have sharply increased living costs.

Additionally, Abubakar promised to reopen northern borders for legitimate trade.
He faces incumbent President Tinubu and Peter Obi, both of whom defeated him in the 2023 elections.
The rally in Sokoto follows Tinubu’s campaign launch in Kaduna, as the northwest region holds the highest number of registered voters and remains heavily affected by banditry and insurgency.
