The African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of worsening insecurity, poverty and Nigeria’s education crisis.

Amaechi made the remarks on Thursday during the ADC’s presidential campaign visit to Kebbi State under its “Road to 2027” campaign. He urged Nigerians to reject the current administration and vote for the ADC in the 2027 general elections.

The former Rivers State governor claimed the number of out-of-school children rose from fewer than 12 million before Tinubu took office to 20 million. He also alleged that 92 million Nigerians could neither read nor write.

“Before Tinubu came, out-of-school children were less than how many?, Less than 12 million, today, out of school children is 20 million. Tinubu, in less than 4 years, has brought our children, 8 million children, out of school. Today, there are 92 million Nigerians who can neither read nor write”, he said.

Amaechi also accused the President of failing to address the country’s security challenges.

“Tinubu is increasing insecurity. He has no solution, for Christ’s sake. You are the solution,” Amaechi told supporters.

The ADC candidate also criticised the Tinubu administration’s borrowing, claiming that Nigeria’s debt had risen sharply compared with the previous government of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Amaechi alleged that while Buhari borrowed between $21 billion and $22 billion, the current administration had taken on nearly $30 billion in borrowing. He further accused Tinubu’s government of taking credit for railway projects initiated under Buhari.

“Under Buhari, we borrowed, we did Lagos-Ibadan railway, right? Let him show us one railway he did,” he said.

Amaechi also claimed that the previous administration had awarded the contract for the Kano railway terminal and secured the funds before leaving office.

“I awarded the contract, I got the money. Before we left, we got the money, we put it in the bank, and that is what they are working with,” he said.

“They did not build it,” he added, accusing the Tinubu administration of presenting the project as its achievement.

He also recalled facilitating a railway project to Dutse after the Emir of Dutse requested one.

Turning to the 2027 elections, Amaechi urged ADC supporters to remain determined and protect their votes at polling units. He warned against attempts to intimidate voters and urged Nigerians to ensure their votes were counted.

“We must go out and march. We must go out and vote. Don’t mind those who want to stop us,” he said.

Amaechi also rejected attempts to frame the political contest along religious or ethnic lines, describing such arguments as blackmail.

“It has nothing to do with religion, it has nothing to do with ethnicity. It is a blackmail,” he said.

He insisted that Nigerians, not any single politician, hold the power to determine the country’s future through their votes.
