New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced a new theme for its 2027 Met Gala exhibition on Thursday after cancelling a planned retrospective of British designer John Galliano over his past anti-Semitic remarks.

The new exhibition, titled extraORDINARY, will run from May 9, 2027, to January 9, 2028.

In a statement, the museum said the exhibition would “examine how design reveals unexpected possibilities within everyday things”. The announcement follows the cancellation of the planned Galliano retrospective in August.

The decision came after donors and political figures criticised the museum’s plans because of the designer’s past comments. Galliano also announced that the exhibition would not go ahead.

“After much reflection and discussion with all those involved, I have decided, with great sadness, that it is best for the exhibition not to take place at this time,” he wrote on Instagram.

He also apologised for his past remarks, particularly those directed at Jewish and Asian communities.

“I remain fully accountable for the pain caused by my words in the past, particularly the hurt I caused to the Jewish and Asian communities, and I remain deeply sorry,” he added.

Galliano’s career suffered a major setback after he made anti-Semitic remarks to customers at a bar in Paris. A French court later convicted him over the incident.

He served as creative director of Christian Dior from 1996 to 2011. After a period away from the fashion industry, he joined Maison Margiela, where he led the label for a decade before leaving in 2024. In March 2026, he announced a two-year artistic partnership with Spanish fashion retailer Zara.

Meanwhile, the Met’s annual Costume Institute exhibition is largely funded through its star-studded Met Gala, which attracts leading figures from fashion and entertainment.

The 2027 Met Gala is scheduled for May 3, before the exhibition opening on May 9.

Andrew Bolton, curator of the Met’s Costume Institute, said the new exhibition would explore the deeper meaning behind everyday clothing and objects.

“The ordinary is never quite as simple as it appears. A pair of jeans, a white shirt, or a sweatshirt can hold traces of a life—the habits, memories, and attachments that make something our own,” he said.
