Pope Leo XIV announced Friday that he remains in “fairly good shape” following successful lung cancer surgery last month as he landed in Uruguay to start a 12-day tour of South America.
Speaking to reporters on board the papal plane, the 71-year-old pontiff expressed gratitude for his medical team and dismissed lingering doubts about his ability to travel, emphasising that he felt fully convinced the journey had to move forward.
Surgeons at Rome’s Gemelli hospital removed a cancerous tumour and part of the Pope’s right lung during an operation on October 13.

Doctors discharged him four days later, confirming he requires no further therapy and remains fully fit to travel.
When asked for advice for those receiving a cancer diagnosis, Leo urged people not to live in fear, highlighting regular check-ups and early detection as life-saving blessings.
