HIV Prevention: Rwanda Starts Pilot Program For PrEP Availability To All

Rwanda is piloting the possibilities of making HIV-prevention pills-which are currently only accessible to key populations in the country available to everyone.

Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC) says the pilot stage of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is at its early stage but has reached more than 196 health facilities countrywide.

PrEP is a pill taken by HIV-negative people to protect them from infection.

Taking pills can stop the HIV virus from establishing an infection in a person who has been exposed.

The pilot program hopes to start with female sex workers as their prevalence is 45.8 per cent
