United States (US) President Donald Trump has announced plans to ban CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House.
Trump made the announcement on Friday in a post on Truth Social.
He accused the three outlets of repeatedly publishing what he called “fiction and lies” about his administration and the United States.
“Media Outlets shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES when they’re covering the President of the United States, the Trump Administration, or the United States of America,” Trump wrote.
He said other media organisations could also face similar restrictions.
Also, Trump said the ban on CNN, MS NOW and Politico was effective immediately.
“I am proud to announce that, effective immediately, I am banning Fake News CNN, MSNOW… and Politico… from the White House as a result of their constant ‘reporting’ FAKE NEWS!” he said.
Trump did not give specific examples of reports from the three outlets that he considered false.
Barring news outlets from the White House is extremely rare for US presidents.
However, Trump banned a CNN reporter during his first term.
Former President Richard Nixon also restricted The Washington Post over its Watergate reporting.
Trump’s second administration has introduced tighter controls on White House reporters.
For example, the administration decides which journalists can join the press “pool” for events in restricted spaces.
These spaces include the Oval Office and Air Force One.
Last year, Trump also barred The Associated Press from some events.
The move followed the news agency’s decision to continue using “Gulf of Mexico” instead of Trump’s preferred “Gulf of America”.
The latest announcement also came despite a White House press rotation released earlier this week.
The list included CNN and Politico among outlets assigned to cover the administration.
Trump has frequently criticised news organisations over their coverage of his presidency.
