UI To Destroy Uncollected Certificates

The University of Ibadan (UI) has announced plans to shred certificates that remain uncollected for more than 10 years.

The university announced this in updated guidelines for graduates regarding how to obtain Statements of Result and certificates.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that its correspondent sighted the special bulletin containing the guidelines on Wednesday.

The bulletin, dated September 15, 2026, was signed by the Registrar, Ganiyu Saliu.

Under the new guidelines, graduates must collect their Statements of Result within six months of being notified that the documents are ready.

The university said graduates who fail to collect their Statements of Result within the stipulated period would be required to pay a N2,500 non-collection penalty before the documents could be released.

According to the institution, Statements of Result would remain valid for two years from the date of issue and serve as interim evidence of graduation until graduates collect their certificates.

The university, however, said the certificate remained the official and permanent evidence of a graduate’s qualification.

It therefore directed graduates to collect their certificates within the two-year validity period of their Statements of Result.

The guidelines provide that certificates would be available for collection from the date of convocation until one year after the ceremony, with a statutory issuance and collection fee of N7,500 during that period.

Certificates collected after the initial one-year period would attract additional non-collection penalties.

The university said graduates collecting their certificates after one year but within five years would pay a N25,000 penalty, while those collecting them after five years but within 10 years would pay N50,000.

However, certificates that remain uncollected for more than 10 years would be liable to shredding, the university warned.

UI clarified that the non-collection penalties are separate from the N7,500 statutory fee for certificate issuance and collection.

The institution urged graduates and other relevant stakeholders to take note of the guidelines and comply with the requirements for collecting their academic documents.
