Adebayo Adelabu has resigned as Nigeria’s Minister of Power to pursue his ambition to contest the governorship of Oyo State.
In a letter dated April 22, 2026, addressed to President Bola Tinubu, Adelabu confirmed that his resignation will take effect on April 30, 2026. He submitted the letter through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation to ensure a smooth transition.
He said he stepped down with a deep sense of honour and gratitude, noting that the decision would allow for an orderly handover of responsibilities. He also thanked the President for the opportunity to serve and highlighted his contributions to power-sector reforms.

Adelabu explained that he took the decision to focus fully on his long-standing governorship ambition, which dates back to 2016 during his tenure as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. He recalled that he previously resigned from the apex bank in 2018 to pursue the same political goal.
He added that his resignation aligns with provisions of the amended electoral law, which bar serving political office holders from contesting elections, making it necessary for him to step aside at this time.
