The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has appointed Nollywood actor and politician Kenneth Okonkwo as his spokesperson for the 2027 presidential election campaign.

Okonkwo, who served as spokesperson for Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, announced his new appointment in a post on X on Thursday.

“I am pleased to offer you an appointment as my Spokesperson for the 2027 General Elections in Nigeria, following my victory as the Presidential Candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC),” the appointment letter read.

“While congratulating you on this appointment, I look forward to your valuable contribution to the campaign and to the advancement of democratic engagement in Nigeria.”

According to the letter, Atiku said the appointment was based on Okonkwo’s “competence, public communication skills, integrity, political judgment, and ability to represent” him professionally.

Reacting to the appointment, Okonkwo thanked Atiku, saying it reflected the former vice president’s commitment to dialogue and inclusiveness.

“This appointment speaks volumes of the democratic credentials of HE AA. Rather than pick offence against any of his associates for expressing genuine reservations about any action taken, HE AA always opts for dialogue and compromise that will engender a solution to problems,” he wrote.

Okonkwo added that the interests of the South-East were discussed during his dialogue with the ADC presidential candidate before he accepted the role.

He also thanked former ADC National Chairman Ralph Nwosu and Atiku’s Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties, Ekene Onwuka, for their roles in the coalition and in facilitating his appointment.

Expressing gratitude to his family, friends and supporters, Okonkwo asked Nigerians to pray for him, seeking “wisdom, courage, provision, and protection” to discharge the responsibilities of the office and contribute to “a glorious and great Nigeria.”
