President Bola Tinubu on Saturday alleged that former vice president Atiku Abubakar used public resources to build a university while in office, questioning his integrity ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Tinubu made the remarks during an All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign rally in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, while criticising opposition figures over their comments on economic hardship.
“Ask him how he built a university while in office as Vice President, in charge of our economy. Who built the university for him? It’s your money. It’s your effort,” Tinubu told the crowd.

He described Atiku as “a man without moral integrity, latitude and ethics for the office”.
Although Tinubu did not name the institution, his remarks appeared to refer to the American University of Nigeria (AUN), founded by Atiku in Yola, Adamawa State.
The university’s official history identifies the former vice president as its founder.

Atiku, who served as vice president from 1999 to 2007, is seeking to contest the 2027 presidential election on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
However, a Federal High Court ruling on Thursday nullified the ADC leadership structure that produced his nomination, as well as the decisions taken by the disputed party leadership.
The ADC has rejected the ruling and said it would appeal, while Atiku has insisted he remains in the presidential race.
Tinubu also thanked Rivers voters for supporting him in the 2023 election and asked them to back his bid for a second term.
“Today again, I return here to say thank you and seek your support for the second term,” he said.
The president defended his economic record, claiming that 27 of Nigeria’s 36 states had been unable to pay salaries when he took office, but that his administration had since reversed the situation.
Earlier, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara pledged to mobilise at least three million votes for Tinubu in 2027, thanking the president for intervening in the state’s political crisis.
Tinubu assured Fubara that he would not regret his support.
