Bandits have attacked the Dukura community in Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State, killing two people and taking away livestock and motorcycles belonging to residents.
The attackers reportedly struck on Monday morning after blocking the road linking the affected communities to Tambuwal market.
They were said to have rustled cows, camels and sheep, while also taking motorcycles belonging to some commercial motorcycle operators before security personnel arrived.
The attack reportedly heightened tension in Dukura, Dalijan and other communities in Girkau Ward, including Zugu, Indire, Mazoji, Tungar Kabawa, Runtuwa, Jabga and Sabon Garin Zugu.
Confirming the incident, Sokoto State Police Public Relations Officer, Ahmed Rufai, said the command received information about the attack and deployed personnel to the area.
Rufai said the police engaged the bandits in a gun battle, forcing them to retreat.
He, however, said two people had already been killed before the arrival of the police.
“Immediately we got the information, our men moved to the area and engaged the bandits in gunshots, forcing them to retreat.
“Unfortunately, before the arrival of the police, the bandits had already killed two people and made away with some animals,” he said.
The police spokesman said efforts were continuing to establish further details about the attack and strengthen security in the affected communities.
The incident comes after suspected bandits attacked Tofa community in Rabah Local Government Area of Sokoto State, killing at least 10 people and injuring several others.
