The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has alerted the public to a fraudulent scheme involving an online marketing and earning platform called “CPM,” which claims the agency is helping to resolve a hacking incident.

Subscribers of the platform were told that their systems had been compromised and that additional payments were required to recover funds, with operators falsely claiming NITDA was involved in the resolution process, the agency said on Monday.

“NITDA wishes to categorically state that these claims are false and misleading,” the agency said in an advisory.

As Nigeria’s IT regulator, NITDA said it never requests or collects money from citizens to provide cybersecurity incident response, recover funds, or assist private companies.

The agency advised the public to stop making any further payments to anyone claiming such fees are linked to NITDA.

The scheme may be a form of social engineering or fraud, NITDA warned, adding that criminals may be exploiting victims under the pretence of resolving a cyber breach or recovering lost investments.

“As a government agency and Nigeria’s Information Technology regulator, NITDA does not request or collect money from citizens to provide incident response support, recover funds, or assist private entities in resolving cybersecurity incidents,” NITDA said.

“Members of the public are therefore strongly advised to exercise caution and avoid making any additional payments to any individual, group, or platform claiming that such payments are required by or connected to NITDA.

“The reported pattern may indicate possible social engineering or fraudulent activity aimed at exploiting affected individuals under the guise of resolving a cybersecurity incident or recovering lost investments.”

The agency urged Nigerians to be cautious with online investment platforms, avoid sending more money to recover past losses, verify any government-related claims through official channels, protect personal and financial information, and report suspicious activities to authorities.

“NITDA remains committed to promoting cybersecurity awareness and protecting the public against cyber-enabled fraud and deceptive online activities,” said Hadiza Umar, the agency’s Director of Corporate Communications.
