The Enugu State Government has announced a temporary restriction of movement across the six local government areas that make up the Enugu North Senatorial District ahead of Saturday’s by-election.
The Secretary to the State Government, Chidiebere Onyia, disclosed the directive in a public service announcement issued on Friday, saying it was to ensure a peaceful, orderly and credible election.
The restriction will apply from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on election day and covers the district’s 102 electoral wards.
“The Government of Enugu State wishes to inform the general public that the Enugu North Senatorial District By-Election will hold on Saturday, June 20, 2026.
“To ensure the peaceful, orderly, and credible conduct of the election, there will be a restriction of movement from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. across the six Local Government Areas and 102 electoral wards that make up the Enugu North Senatorial District,” the statement read.
The state government said the restriction would affect Igbo-Etiti, Igbo Eze North, Igbo Eze South, Nsukka, Udenu and Uzo-Uwani local government areas, which make up the senatorial district.

However, officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security personnel, accredited election observers, journalists and other authorised election workers were exempted from the restriction.
Onyia urged residents and eligible voters to remain peaceful and comply with electoral guidelines, while calling on political parties, candidates and their supporters to conduct themselves responsibly before, during and after the poll.
He added that security agencies had been directed to enforce the directive and maintain law and order throughout the election.
“The people and residents of the district are encouraged to exercise their civic responsibility peacefully and in accordance with electoral guidelines. Political parties, candidates and their supporters are also urged to remain law-abiding during and after the exercise.
“Security agencies have been directed to ensure strict compliance with this directive,” he stated.
The by-election, organised by INEC, is being conducted to fill the vacant Enugu North Senatorial seat.
