The Delta State Police Command has busted a suspected drug cartel in Ukwani Local Government Area and recovered 21 bags of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp.
The operation was carried out on Saturday by operatives of the command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) at Owa-Abbi.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists in Warri on Sunday.
Edafe said the operation followed the crime-fighting initiative of Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu and was based on credible intelligence.
“On 8th August 2026, the Command’s VCRU operatives, acting on credible and actionable intelligence, carried out an intelligence-led raid on a suspected criminal hideout at Owa-Abbi in Ukwani Local Government Area,” he said.
During the raid, police arrested 56-year-old Lucky Oyiboka and recovered 21 bags of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp after searching the premises.
The police said preliminary investigations indicated that Oyiboka was allegedly involved in the distribution of illicit drugs.
“Investigation has been intensified to determine the extent of the illicit drug network and identify other persons connected to the operation,” Edafe said.
He added that the suspect remained in custody and would be charged in court after investigations are completed.
Delta State Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to “intelligence-led policing and sustained operations targeted at dismantling criminal networks and curbing the proliferation of illicit drugs across the state.”
Oyeniyi also urged residents to provide the police with credible information, assuring them that “the identities of informants will be treated with utmost confidentiality.”
