Industry estimates released on Sunday have shown that “The Devil Wears Prada 2” has stayed at number one in North American cinemas for a second week, beating a strong challenge from “Mortal Kombat II.”

According to Exhibitor Relations, the sequel to the 2006 hit about the fierce world of high fashion earned 43 million in the US and Canada. The film stars Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci. Its worldwide total has now reached 433 million.

Streep, who plays the demanding magazine editor Miranda Priestly, widely seen as a nod to Vogue’s Anna Wintour, won a Golden Globe and received an Oscar nomination for her original role.

Second place went to “Mortal Kombat II,” a Warner Bros sequel based on the fantasy fighting video game. It debuted with $40 million. Analyst David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research called it “an excellent opening for the second episode in an action thriller series.” He stated, “The weekend figure is well above average for the genre, and it’s close to double the start of the previous film, although that movie opened during the pandemic.”

“Michael,” the biopic about pop legend Michael Jackson, dropped to third but still took in 36.5million. The Lions Gate Film follows Jackson′s rise from child star to global icon but does not include any material about the abuse allegations made against him. It has earned over $575 million worldwide. Jaafar Jackson, the singer’s nephew, plays his uncle in his first acting role.

Fourth place went to “The Sheep Detectives,” an Amazon MGM family mystery. The film earned $15.9 million. It stars Hugh Jackman as a shepherd who reads mysteries to his sheep. When he is found dead, the sheep voiced by Julia Louis‑Dreyfus and Patrick Stewart, among others, solve the crime. Gross called it “a solid opening for a live‑action/animation hybrid.”

Fifth place was another debut: James Cameron’s concert documentary “Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft, The Tour Live in 3D,” which took in $7.5 million. The Paramount film follows the Oscar‑ and Grammy‑winning singer at her shows in Manchester.
