The Lagos State governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Adedeji Doherty, has criticised attacks by All Progressives Congress (APC) governors against the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, describing them as a distraction from issues affecting Nigerians.
Speaking to journalists at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, Doherty said governors should prioritise their constitutional responsibilities of protecting citizens and improving their welfare rather than focusing on political disagreements surrounding Wike and the proposed Rainbow Coalition.
“First of all, with all due respect to the governors themselves, the most important thing that should be in the forefront is Nigeria,” Doherty said.

He added that placing national interest above political differences would reduce the focus on individual political figures and ongoing coalition discussions.
“Once the governors see that Nigeria is in the forefront, then the issue of Wike would not even be an issue,” he said.
Doherty also dismissed suggestions that the proposed Rainbow Coalition could affect President Bola Tinubu’s re-election plans in 2027, arguing that political alliances are part of democratic engagement. He questioned why broader political cooperation should be viewed negatively, citing ongoing discussions among opposition parties.
“If there is a coalition between ADC and all the other political parties, why can’t there be that same coalition between PDP and APC?” he asked.

The PDP candidate said his campaign for the Lagos governorship election would be rolled out in phases, adding that the approach would demonstrate his preparedness and experience.
“Our campaign is broken down into three, four, I think about five phases. Those phases are going to come in segments, and that is where you are going to see the experience and the tenacity of someone that has been ready for this, running this state,” he said.
Doherty maintained that political conversations should focus on building a system that prioritises citizens’ interests rather than internal party disputes.
