At least 21 people have been killed and 61 others injured following a powerful explosion at a fireworks factory in central China, according to state media on Tuesday.

The blast occurred on Monday afternoon at a facility operated by Liuyang Huasheng Fireworks Manufacturing and Display Company in Liuyang, Hunan Province, state broadcaster China Central Television reported.

Footage circulating online showed repeated explosions sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky, while images released a day later revealed extensive destruction, with buildings reduced to debris and others left severely damaged.

Rescue operations are ongoing, with more than 480 emergency personnel deployed to search for survivors. Authorities also set up a three-kilometre control zone around the site and evacuated nearby residents as a precaution.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has directed authorities to prioritise the treatment of the injured, intensify search efforts for the missing, and ensure accountability for those responsible, according to state news agency Xinhua on Tuesday.

Police have detained members of the company’s management as investigations into the cause of the explosion continue.

Liuyang is one of China’s major fireworks production centres, accounting for a significant share of both domestic supply and exports.

Industrial accidents remain a recurring concern in the country, often linked to weak enforcement of safety regulations.
