Five people died when a Flying Doctor Service helicopter crashed at a remote airfield in Sarawak on the island of Borneo on Tuesday afternoon.
The BO-105 helicopter went down approximately 195 miles southeast of Miri, killing all five individuals on board.
Local disaster management officials confirmed that the victims included the pilot, a doctor, a medical assistant, and two nurses.
Social media video footage showed the aircraft emitting thick smoke shortly before it struck the ground.
Malaysia’s Flying Doctor Service provides critical healthcare to indigenous communities living in the dense jungles of the country’s interior regions, where difficult terrain makes ground travel nearly impossible.
These specialised medical teams routinely travel by helicopter and small aircraft to conduct monthly or bi-monthly health visits at remote villages and traditional longhouses.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia announced that an air crash investigation team will arrive at the remote site on Wednesday to determine the cause of the disaster.
Official sources stated that it remains unclear what triggered the malfunction and crash at this stage.
