France defeated Senegal 3-1 in their World Cup group-stage match on Tuesday, with Kylian Mbappe scoring twice at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Mbappe’s goals, his 13th and 14th in World Cup tournaments, came in the second half after Senegal had held France to a goalless first half.
Bradley Barcola also scored for France, chipping the ball over Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.
Senegal scored a consolation goal in added time through Ibrahim Mbaye, whose shot beat France goalkeeper Mike Maignan.
Mbappe’s 14 World Cup goals place him level with Gerd Mueller as the third-highest scorer in World Cup history. Miroslav Klose holds the record with 16 goals.
Lionel Messi, who has 13 World Cup goals, is scheduled to make his tournament debut for Argentina against Algeria later Tuesday.

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni said Messi, 38, was fit to play despite a hamstring injury sustained while playing for Inter Miami in late May.
Messi came on as a substitute and scored in a warm-up match against Iceland last week, Scaloni noted.
“Everyone wants to see him out on the pitch, not just Argentines, because of the impact he has on people,” Scaloni said at his pre-match press conference.
“He has always been crucial for us and now he will be even more so. He looks good.”
Norway, appearing in their first World Cup since 1998, face Iraq later Tuesday. Erling Haaland is set to make his World Cup finals debut for Norway.
Haaland was the Premier League’s top scorer for the third time in four seasons at Manchester City and has scored 55 goals in 50 international appearances.
Norway coach Stale Solbakken said he expected Haaland to have an impact on the match.
