Guyana, located on the northern coast of South America, has agreed to receive a limited number of migrants deported from the United States (US) under a temporary arrangement.

President Irfaan Ali’s government announced the agreement in a statement on Saturday.

The deal allows Guyana to receive deportees without criminal records, following the Trump administration’s expanded deportation campaign.

Since President Donald Trump returned to the White House in 2026, the US has increased deportations to third countries instead of migrants’ countries of origin.

A statement from Ali’s office said the government views the arrangement as part of Guyana’s commitment to human rights and international cooperation.

“President Irfaan Ali’s Government has framed the arrangement as an extension of Guyana’s longstanding commitment to human rights and international cooperation,” the statement said.

Guyana stressed that the arrangement is “temporary in nature and does not constitute permanent resettlement.”

The government also said migrants would be relocated to Guyana voluntarily while they await decisions on their immigration status.

Depending on the outcome, the migrants would either return to their countries of origin or relocate elsewhere of their choice.

Other Central American and Caribbean countries have also agreed to cooperate with Washington’s deportation campaign.

The US previously sent 250 Venezuelan migrants to El Salvador’s CECOT maximum-security prison under its third-country deportation policy.
