INEC Has No Candidates, Parties

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reaffirmed its neutrality before the 2027 general election, saying it has no candidate or party to favour.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, made the statement during a visit to the Emir of Zazzau, Amb. Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, on Sunday. The visit formed part of the commission’s stakeholder engagement and preparations for the 2027 elections. It also preceded INEC’s planned interactive meeting with staff and a zonal readiness assessment.

Amupitan was accompanied by National Commissioners, the Acting Director-General of the Electoral Institute and other senior commission officials.

During the visit, the INEC chairman described traditional institutions as important stakeholders because of their influence and reach across communities.

He said elections were fundamentally about the social contract between citizens and those entrusted with public office.

According to Amupitan, public trust would remain essential to Nigeria’s democratic success. He also said INEC had started preparations early because of the size and complexity of conducting elections across the country.

The commission, he explained, had moved away from last-minute preparations and was already testing, auditing and strengthening its operational systems.

Amupitan assured the Emir that INEC would remain committed to neutrality, fairness and transparency throughout the electoral process.

“We have no candidates, we have no political party, we have no interest other than the sovereign will of the people of Nigeria,” he said.

He added that the commission would continue engaging traditional institutions and other stakeholders as preparations for the 2027 general election intensify.
