King Charles III Mourns King Harald V of Norway

United Kingdom (UK) King Charles III has mourned the death of his “dear cousin”, King Harald V of Norway, describing him as a “towering figure”.

Harald died aged 89 on Friday, with Norway’s Crown Prince Haakon succeeding him on the throne.

In a statement, Charles said he and his wife, Queen Camilla, were deeply saddened by Harald’s death.

“For 35 years, King Harald served his people with unwavering dedication, guiding Norway through times of great change with warmth and humility,” Charles said.

Charles described Harald as a much-loved family member and friend whose “kindness, compassion and deep sense of duty” touched people across generations.

“As Norway mourns the loss of so towering a figure, my whole family join in remembering a much-loved kinsman and friend,” he said.

Charles also highlighted the close historical ties between Britain and Norway, noting that Britain was among the first countries to recognise Norwegian independence and establish diplomatic relations in 1905. He said the relationship between both countries grew stronger during the Second World War, when their shared experiences helped strengthen their ties.

Norway’s palace announced Harald’s death on Friday, saying he had died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital at the age of 89.
