The Nigerian Government has assured parents and students that the proposed management arrangement for King’s College, Lagos, will not result in an increase in school fees.
Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, gave the assurance on Wednesday in Abuja, while responding to concerns about the agreement with the King’s College Old Boys Association (KCOBA).
Alausa said the arrangement was intended to provide a]dditional resources for the school without changing its ownership, which remains with the government.
He said the agreement would be monitored through strict key performance indicators (KPIs) to ensure that all parties meet the required standards.
According to the minister, the Ministry of Education has also constituted an implementation and monitoring team that will carry out unannounced inspections to assess compliance.
Alausa said the government was willing to engage with unions and consider concerns that could improve the implementation of the arrangement.
He said infrastructure deterioration across Unity Colleges had accumulated over decades and could not be resolved immediately through government funding alone.
The minister again ruled out any increase in school fees, saying the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) included provisions designed to protect the interests of the government and students.
He also encouraged journalists to visit the schools and independently assess their facilities and conditions amid the controversy surrounding the agreement.
