Kuwait has condemned the latest drone attack targeting Saudi Arabia’s oil facilities, accusing Iran-affiliated militias operating from Iraq of seeking to destabilise the Gulf region.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Kuwait’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the attempted strike on petroleum facilities in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province as a “flagrant violation” of the kingdom’s sovereignty and a threat to regional security.
The condemnation follows Saudi Arabia’s announcement that its air defences intercepted and destroyed several drones launched from Iraqi territory before they could strike oil facilities in the Eastern Province.
Riyadh blamed Iran-backed militias for the attempted attack and said it reserved the right to respond. Iran, however, denied involvement in attacks on Saudi targets.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses the State of Kuwait’s condemnation and strong denunciation of the continued attacks by Iran-affiliated militias in Iraq against the sisterly Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which reflect the determination of those militias to persist in escalation and undermine the security and stability of the region,” the statement read.
It described the latest incident as “the brazen aggression involving the launch of drones in a desperate attempt to target petroleum facilities in the Eastern Province,” adding that it constituted “a flagrant violation of the Kingdom’s sovereignty and a threat to its security and the safety of its territories.”
Kuwait said the attack came despite Saudi Arabia’s efforts to help reduce tensions across the Middle East.
Reaffirming its support for Riyadh, Kuwait stressed that Saudi Arabia’s security is inseparable from that of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
“The Ministry reaffirms the State of Kuwait’s absolute solidarity with the sisterly Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, its standing by its side, and its support for all measures it takes to protect its security, sovereignty, interests, and capabilities, including its inherent right to self-defense, as guaranteed by international law under Article (51) of the United Nations Charter.”
It added that “the security of the Kingdom is an indivisible part of the security of the State of Kuwait and the Gulf Cooperation Council states.”
Saudi Arabia said on Tuesday that its air defences intercepted multiple drones launched from Iraq that were aimed at petroleum facilities in the Eastern Province.
Saudi officials attributed the attack to Iran-backed militias operating in Iraq, an allegation that has further heightened tensions in the Gulf following a broader regional confrontation involving Iran and its allied armed groups.
The attempted strike is the latest in a series of attacks targeting energy infrastructure in the Gulf, raising concerns over regional stability and the security of global oil supplies.
The incident also comes as Saudi Arabia has sought to support diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions following recent hostilities involving Iran, Israel and the United States.
