The United States announced on Friday that the ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel has been extended by 45 days, following talks mediated by Washington despite renewed exchanges of violence.

The US State Department said the agreement reached on April 16 would remain in place to allow further diplomatic progress.

“The April 16 cessation of hostilities will be extended by 45 days to enable further progress,” State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said.

Pigott said the extension was intended to create space for continued negotiations, adding that talks aimed at a long-term political settlement would hold on June 2 and 3, while military-level discussions are scheduled for May 29.

He said the aim of the ongoing engagement was to promote lasting peace between both countries, mutual recognition of sovereignty, and improved security along their shared border.

“We hope these discussions will advance lasting peace between the two countries, full recognition of each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and establishing genuine security along their shared border,” Pigott said.

The ceasefire, which had already been prolonged once, was due to expire on Sunday before the latest extension.

While the US, Israel and Lebanon continue to treat the truce as active, Israel has maintained strikes in Lebanon during the diplomatic process, saying it will continue targeting Hezbollah, which has not participated in the Washington-led talks.
