Malawi have defeated Egypt 3-1 to move to the top of Group C and edge closer to a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The impressive victory came on Saturday at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat, where Malawi followed up their shock win over defending champions Nigeria with another outstanding performance.
Star striker Temwa Chawinga played a key role in the victory, creating the opening goal before scoring Malawi’s third.
Rose Kadzere gave Malawi the lead in the 35th minute after finishing a pass from Chawinga past Egypt goalkeeper Maha Shehata.
Faith Chinzimu doubled the advantage in first-half stoppage time with a close-range finish to hand Malawi a 2-0 lead at the break.
Malawi were reduced to 10 players seven minutes into the second half after Rose Alufandika received a straight red card for bringing down Habiba Essam as the last defender.
Despite being a player down, Malawi extended their lead in the 69th minute when Chawinga beat Shehata to the ball and headed into an empty net.
Egypt pulled one back two minutes later through Eman Kassem, who headed home a free-kick to score her country’s first goal of the tournament after suffering a 6-0 defeat to Zambia in their opening match.
The result puts Malawi provisionally top of Group C.
The debutants will qualify for the quarter-finals if defending champions Nigeria fail to beat Zambia later on Saturday.
