Real Madrid defender Ferland Mendy is facing a significant period on the sidelines after sustaining a serious thigh injury during Sunday’s 2-0 victory over Espanyol.

The French left-back was forced off the pitch just 14 minutes into the match, a game notable for delaying Barcelona’s La Liga title celebrations.

Medical evaluations confirmed a rectus femoris tendon injury in his right leg, and he is expected to undergo surgery shortly.

This latest setback marks the 16th injury Mendy has endured since his move from Lyon to Madrid in 2019.

Spanish media reports indicate that his recovery will likely take several months, further cementing his reputation as an injury-plagued player for the Spanish giants.

The timing of the injury also impacts his international prospects.

Mendy, who hasn’t featured for the French national team since June 2024, was already considered a long shot for Didier Deschamps’s World Cup roster.

This surgery effectively ends any remaining hope of him contending for a spot in the upcoming tournament.
